De La Soul + Nike

“When we first heard about this project we were psyched on the challenge. We pride ourselves on being able to get bodies moving, so it was cool to do it with a specific goal in mind – giving runners the sonic fuel to clock some miles.”

I’ve been waiting for a new De La Soul album since, “The Grind Date,” which I was initially worried about being super wack (Anyone remember Tribe‘s ‘The Love Movement” and all of the hate that resulted after?)…. but it was fresh & left me waiting a little more De La in the new millennium.

I got word of De La Soul putting their new album out with Nike and was pretty thrown off.  I remember the Dunks ala De La that dropped some time ago (pictured right, I do accept late birthday presents), so it only makes sense that the relationship between De La & Nike would only continue to grow.  The new album is titled ARE YOU IN?: Nike+ Original Run (a 20th anniversary  commemoration of the release of “3 Feet High and Rising“) and is slated to be an iTunes exclusive release, meaning that if you don’t have iTunes.. you’re shit outta luck.  Additional production was provided by Flosstradamus.

The album is geared towards those who run and is the first in a series of releases Nike is intending on sponsoring with future artists on deck such as Aesop Rock, A-Track and LCD Soundsystem.  You can download “ARE YOU IN?” via iTunes starting on Tuesday, April 28, 2009.

I’m not so sure about releasing albums through such commercial measures, but maybe it’s time that artists get paid for name dropping major corporations, anyway?  When’s the next Patron/Grey Goose/Belevedere/Hennesy album coming out, anyway?!

It is what it is, I suppose.  I still got MY Nike boots… maybe I should start running in them.
