Hip hop’s new savior
When Drake‘s mixtape, ‘So Far Gone‘ dropped a few weeks back, I was almost speechless. Not knowing all about him from the get-go, I was an instant fan. In true hip hop nerd fashion, I had his whole short discography within a few minutes. All of a sudden, this album was being bumped by the whole crew, everyone singing, “you the fucking best, best I ever had,” in full force and Drake‘s name was laced in conversations with the homies everywhere – but even more so important – the ladies.
So you’re probably thinking, “Miss Rachel, why the fuck do we care about who YOU think is saving hip hop?” Let’s backtrack for a quick minute. When exactly did the last successful R&B/hip hop crossover happen? My money is on Lauryn Hill, who is completely MIA right now probably all sorts of shades of crazy and hasn’ t released an album since her 1993 solo debut, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” Mos Def seems to have had very little commercial success in regards to his post-Black Star solo work which was heavily reliant on both rock & R&B favors and in my opinion, didn’t impress.
Somehow, this Drake dude has managed to balance the fine line between the characteristically grimey edge of hip hop and the smoothness of R&B – but most importantly, the ladies love him. I haven’t heard this much buzz from my female counterparts about mixtape.. EVER. Somehow, there’s something just a little sexy about hearing an absolutely gorgeous dude who’s singing, and singing well, about %#!&ing you…. AND he can rap?! It’s about time ya’ll heads made something that appeals to us ladies just as much as the guys.
It’s curtains, my friends. He’s bound to blow the fuck up this year after dropping his first major record release with Interscope. I give it about 6 months until your little sister is swapping out her Degrassi Drake poster for her rapper Drake poster (Drake first broke into the limelight as an actor for the teen-based show).
