My boy, Jay-Z has left Def Jam in order to pursue and release Blueprint 3 outside of their broke ass empire. Why? Jay doesn’t exactly indicate. I figure there are probably a few things going on:
- Def Jam is going under. It was reported somewhere in late 2008 that the record label was millions… no, almost a hundred million dollars in debt. My guess is that Jay didn’t want to bail out the company with his record release, thus probably suffering some contract-based pay cut on his album sales. Maybe he just didn’t want to be on the losing team. The later is probably more in my ideal of what Jay would do (I’m making WWJZD? bracelets, catch me on your corner).
- L.A. Reid is getting down with Beyonce. Really, that’s just a funny visual for me.
- Jay rather profit from a company he’s invested in financially (re: “independent”) from his record sales than to pay for L.A.‘s new yacht. This seems most likely, actually.
While creating this list, I learned that Jay is, indeed, releasing Blueprint 3 on his new label, Roc Nation.
I so called that shit.
