“If people could open their minds,” Baatin told The Times in 2000, “they could see a broader perspective of hip-hop instead of categorizing it as 95-beats-per-minute, loud snares and muffled samples. . . . It could be anything.” – Baatin, 2000.
Slum Village has been one of the most prolific musical acts in my existence. I can attribute quite a few magic live musical moments to music that Baatin was a part of – Fantastic Vol. 2 is more of an anthem album than anything. The trifecta of J.Dilla, T3, and Baatin was virtually unstoppable in the Detroit area and beyond in the early 2000s (Elzhi didn’t join the group until months before Baatin went solo). Leaving the group in 2003 due to mental and personal issues, Baatin was expected to return to Slum Village.
In honor of yet another fallen great, check out some of my favorite Slum Village music below.
