McNally Smith College of Music out of Minneapolis has a unique curriculum, including a hip hop diploma which emphasizes recording, mixing, technology, and hip hop history as well as many more traditional music degree programs that can be found at most major universities around the country. From learning about hip hop’s roots to djing to learning creative writing (i.e., this may be the end of the ridiculous rap song, Laffy Taffy, anyone?), this cutting edge hip hop diploma program allows students to do what they’re passionate about in a more professional setting. For those pursing degrees through their formal music programs, hip hop classes can be taken as electives. The Fall 2009 term is the first in which the college has offered the hip hop diploma program.
In supporting hip hop culture as a whole, McNally Smith has decided to offer a new scholarship to young women who wish to pursue their hip hop diploma. In my opinion, this is more of what we need as a cohesive culture as a whole. While the formal school setting may not be the most appealing venue to teach our younger generations how to be respectful, responsible, and reliable hip hop heads, I think this is a great start, especially because the school is attempting to support women within the culture as well. The scholarship will cover roughly half of the tuition cost ($15,000… seriously). McNally hip hop coordinator Toki Wright says:
“Often in the media, the many rewarding aspects and innovations of women in Hip-Hop are overshadowed by their male counterparts. The ‘B-Girl Be Scholarship acknowledges that women’s contributions are important and essential to sustaining and expanding Hip-Hop culture. The work of MC Lyte, Tricia Rose, Queen Latifah, and countless industry representatives demonstrate the power, talent and tenacity it takes to make it in the culture and business of Hip-Hop. “
