Maurice Ka, also known as El Negro, is a Denver based performance artist/ spoken word artist having shared the stage with such luminaries as Jessica Care Moore, Saul Williams, the late Lalo Delgado and Staceyann Chin just to name a few. Maurice Ka has used his love of the healing and transformational qualities of writing and art in general work with a diverse body of organizations such as Denver Center For Crime Victims, United Artists Coalition for Kids, Hope Communities and Alternatives to Family Violence among others. Informed by his dual identity as both Poet and Ifa/Lucumi Priest of Shango, Ka utilizes contemporary narrative arts like performance poetry as a twin to the ancients arts of mediumship in indigenous cultures. Both are ways, that Ka feels are powerful tools to transform the degrees of injustice and in-equity in society by empowering change at its most imperative link; the individual.
