Happy birthday, hip hop!
A short 37 years ago, a lady was celebrating her birthday and asked her brother to throw a few records on for her party. When Kool Herc arrived at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, he probably didn’t realize that he was on the brink of creating an entire music genre which would appeal to people of all ages, all walks of life, and all spectrum of socioeconomic status.
Not impressed? Herc was the first to use two identical records mixed into each other, letting the the break ride out.
Still not impressed? Herc‘s music and style eventually influenced a whole generation of emceeing and breakdancing pioneers.
Check out the footage below from the BBC documentary, Beat This: A hip hop history. Malcolm Mclaren also describes his first hip-hop experience, followed by the story of Jamaican born Dj Kool Herc.
