Denver Treks is an iPhone app that uses GPS to locate historical Denver landmarks near you. The app provides a brief written outline of each location and in many instances a 10 minute audio podcast to give historical context. They have tours called ‘Treks’ which are landmarks clustered around a particular Denver theme.

Here’s some highlights:
Settling the Frontier
Discover the original Indian treaty that voided all future treaties. Explains everything!
Shedding the Frontier Rawness
Explore Denver’s rich Asian heritage. It’s not all Federal Heights and internment camps. No, there is also the patio at Vinyl.

Convergence of Cultures
Denver’s first tomale factory/ boot store/ carniceria is featured. Did you know the same family owns the florist and the transmission repair shop? They look abandoned but they are indeed open for your historical-tourism dollar.
Women of the West
Molly Brown is the only woman that has ever lived in Denver.
Stage Stops, Railroads & Streetcars
Visit a famous Five Points Restaurant. There they display the first and last dollar tipped by a black man.

Mile High Art & Culture
Is there a Post-Elway future? No there isn’t. Spend time with John Elway’s invesco-manifesto. Terrell Davis will carry the weight of the city into our migraine tempered destiny.
Denver’s Iconic Buildings
See the exact photocopier used to forge thousands of citizenship documents for Governor Hickenlooper’s brew-pub empire.

Denver Treks is available in the Apple App Store for free. Someone look it up on Android and let us know if you can find it there.

Where? Stream that bitch on Netflix.

When I think of China the following stereotypes come to mind:

The smart kid in math class.

The old guy at the liq.

A swarming hoard of short little black-haired people frantically moving about a brightly lit metropolitan traffic-blast.

A vague and looming threat of nuclear holocaust.

Kung Fu.

As it turns out there is more to Chinese culture then that. Shocking. Wild China is a six-part documentary largely devoid of politics. They focus on the unique plants and animals of the world’s most populated nation. They’ve got snow monkeys and snow tigers. They’ve got a guy who hunts with an eagle on his shoulder. After 10 years this guy lets the eagle fly off into the wild. Why? So he can shed a single tear so poetic it would burn a hole through Walt Whitman’s grave-stone.
The documentary is beautiful and panoramic in scope. There’s a shot where they fly over a mountainous rice farm. The topography has been built-up with short walls. I assume to irrigate and exploit every meter of eligible farming area. It looks incredible. Flying over American farmland the landscape is all squares and circles – neat little X/Y graph-plane allotments of green crops. Not so in this Chinese farm. The walls wind and bend with the natural shape of the hill-tops. The flooded rice beds reflect the sky light. The rice tastes like strawberries, in my mind at least.
China has been cultivating rice for at least 8,000 years. To put that in perspective:

4,500 years before Akhenaten descended from his space-ship, strapped on his beard and altered the religious direction of the planet, China was growing rice.

4,000 years before Isaac’s ass was nearly brutally murdered by his schizophrenic daddy, China was cultivating rice.

White people had rabbit hides hiding their balls; they ran around clubbing leprechauns and China was cultivating rice and writing ethereal poetry.

Personally though I prefer my Chipolte burrito with no rice – too filling.
There is a super cute panda bear scene. They got a great shot of a Chinese fox stalking a Chinese groundhog. Great shots of Chinese birds. The music is fantastic. The whole series comes together in a sweet and sour, sentimentally soupy kind of way. Like ‘Dances with Wolves’, with no Kevin Costner. And instead of Indians, you have these exotic Chinese places and animals. There’s no violence though. Maybe it’s not like ‘Dances with Wolves’ at all, but it is highly romanticized. I like romance.
Full disclosure: I have watched each episode at least 3 times. I have yet to make it all the way through any of them. The music is dreamy and puts my ass to sleep every time.

It’s not often that a school board would welcome 14 artists (including graffiti and street artists) into their facility with open arms, however one school in Brooklyn has done exactly that.

In the short video below, the concept that art encourages creativity in the youngest minds, regardless of the legality of the act, is stressed and emphasized. The school and the artists alike believe that bringing art to the school fills in the gaps that lie in heading to major art museums, which can be a challenge for students.

This concept is pretty amazing — I only wish that more education systems would adapt art within the walls of their schools on this level — including various forms of street art and graffiti.

More about TheLoveMovement:

The Love Movement was established with one concept in mind, to make a difference. A collaborative effort of public and gallery projects by a group of designers, artists, and teacher from different backgrounds; TLM’s mission is simple, to create art that critiques and pokes fun at society and pop culture while also drawing awareness to current issues throughout the world. Often using discarded materials; TLM creates something new by destroying something old, by creating beauty from which society leaves discarded to decay. The Love Movement has been known to make a difference in society. Through their art sales TLM provided a fresh water well for the village of Cotonou in the African country of Benin; payed for the school supplies, transportation, and fees for children in Colby, Benin and Bali, Indonesa; and has organized a mural project for the Canarsie High School Campus in Brooklyn, New York.
